CAASP Notes April 24, 2006 at Wallingford

Present: Wayne Theriault, Vicki Gustavson, Patrick Hickey, Mark Hill, Bill Scalise, Mario Fusco, Bill Shortell, Fred Saner, Christine Takores

1.      March conference went well. We still some outstanding money and bills. Two programs registered but did not show up. Some discussion concerned payment for these programs. Food was order for these programs in anticipation of their participation so there should be a cost for them. Wayne will have final numbers at next meeting. Pat suggested that participating programs should be more involved with conference planning and workshop development. One suggestion was to require each participating program to provide at least one workshop presenter and/or kiosk table. Programs should be made aware of these requirements at the beginning of the year (September meeting). Next year’s conference is tentatively on for the third week in March (March 21, Wednesday) at CCSU. Mark is working on an alternative. CCSU is getting expensive so any other suggestions should be pursued.

2.      STARS Competition Day is set for May 25 at WCSU in Danbury. At present three schools have committed to participate: Danbury, Killingly, Southington. A couple others have expressed interest but have not completed the forms for registration. These can be gotten at www.caasp.org  the registration deadline is April 28, 2006.

3.      The Professional Development Day for November 2006 needs more participation in planning in order to continue the success we had last year. There was much discussion around restructuring the monthly meetings to short business meetings (30 min max) and then a topical discussion after. If they are organized to be 2 hours of seat time then CEU’s can be issued. Wayne, Bill, and Pat will develop a flier for next year’s PDD along with a registration form and determine which way to go at the first meeting in the fall.

4.      This is an election year and the nominating committee is Wayne, Bill, Pat, and Vicki. We will have a slate of officers for the next meeting. If you are interested in an office please call one of the current board members.

5.      Next meeting will be in Stratford (Vicki’s yacht club) Thursday, June 2. This is a casual meeting to adopt the slate of officers and kick back with pizza and adult beverage to gas about the year. Directions will be posted on the web site.

Respectfully submitted by Bill Scalise

CAASP Notes February 27, 2006 at Southington

Present: Wayne Theriault, Vicki Gustavson, Patrick Hickey, Mark Hill, Bill Scalise

Mark H. reported on the March 22 State Conference. About 150 participants have registered and paid to date. Although the deadline has passed about another 100 to 150 are expected to be there. Much discussion surrounded the need for staff and chaperons from attending programs to supervise there students at all times during the conference. This will be emphasized at the March 20 meeting in Southington. Any last minute workshop ideas should be run through Mark hill. Bill S and Pat H are working on a few. There are 7 kiosk tables at present. If you have committed to getting a kiosk presenter please confirm immediately and call Mark.

Wayne will pay the dues to IALA for this year’s membership.

The executive board has decided to earmark all profits from the Professional Development Day for the purpose of developing and supporting STARS activities.

All programs attending the State Conference are encouraged to bring displays of their programs for tables in the main meeting hall.

The STARS walk through will take place on March 16 at CCSU (now confirmed and posted on the website at www.caasp.org go to STARS News

The schedule for this year’s conference will be the same and wrist bands will be given to all participates.

  1. Mark Hill reported concern over the lack of confirmed speakers and Kiosks for the March 22 State Conference. Please confirm speakers and kiosk presenters ASAP. Call Mark at ALTA (Southington 860-628-3223) with potential speakers or kiosk presenters.
  2. The STARS student meetings have finalized the Welcome, Pledge, and Star Spangle Banner. These students will meet again on March 15 or 16 for a walk through at CCSU. Check the web site for updated information.
  3. The February 27 meeting will be very important for finalizing these details. A snow date of March 6 is the backup. Please check to see if your program’s paper work is in (the due date for registration was January 30). This meeting will be at ALTA in Southington. Check directions on the web site.
  4. The mandatory meeting for all attending programs is March 20 at ALTA as well. A representative from each program is required to be there to pick up packets and go over procedures. Program staff and chaperones must be active participants in the conference not only in supervision but also in swap shop and workshop facilitation. Programs without sufficient supervision will be asked to leave and not afforded spaces at future conferences.
  5. Nancy Berman reported on the STARS Competition Day to be held at Western Connecticut State University on Thursday, May 25, 2006. The conference will run from 8am to 2pm. Lunch will be provided. Again, as last year, 4 events will be offered, 2 team events and 2 individual events. The 2 Team Events will be 1) Audio, Video, or Live Promotion, and 2) Community Service Project. The Individual Events will be 1) Public Speaking, and 2) Career Portfolio. Nancy will be working on the details for the day. Bill Scalise will have packets available and present an informational workshop on March 22 during the State Conference. Registration deadline for this event is April 28, 2006. Again, there will be no charge for CAASP member programs. As always, anyone who would like to help out with this event is more than welcome and can call either Nancy at Danbury ACE (berman@danbury.k12.ct.us) or Bill at Killingly ALPS (wscalise@killinglyschools.org).
  6. Pat Hickey and Mark Hill explored the possibility of selling something with the CAASP logo at the March conference to generate a profit. With the prices at CCSU climbing each year we have not broken even in the last few years on the conference. Anyone with ideas or any volunteers who would like to help out with this fundraiser please contact Pat or Mark (mhill@southingtonschools.org).
